Department Description
The Life Safety Services section is a specialized unit within the Building Services Division of Facilities Services. This section is comprised of the Life Safety/Electronic-Specialty Shop, the Access Control/Key Shop, and the Emergency Generator Shop. This organizational unit delivers a high level of maintenance and support to safeguard human life, property, research, and other critical areas of significant financial and time investments for the entire University campus community including: all residence halls, classrooms facilities, research lab facilities, athletics facilities, medical school facilities, and offices facilities. These areas include but are not limited to: the Central Alarm Receiving System (CARS), all fire alarm detection and suppression systems, security and CCTV systems, key control, accessibility controllers, Biometric and Card Access, equipment alarm systems, and backup power emergency generators. Additionally, this unit supports all facets of Facilities Services, Energy Services, Environment Health & Safety, Public Safety, Facilities Planning & Construction, and Residential Student Housing in their efforts to support the campus community, all of which contribute to the University's mission of teaching, research and public service.
Position Description
The primary purpose of this position is to be a technical resource supporting all lower grade technicians/personnel assigned to the shop in the areas of: Security, Access, CCTV, remote integrated key access controls, electrified and traditional hardware. This position must be capable of designing Card Access, Security, and CCTV system installations customized to customer/departmental need and/or requirements. This position must have the technical background and knowledge to anticipate and proactively pursue possible maintenance issues before they occur by examining systems performance, trending past performance, and applying tech notes sent or posted by equipment/system manufactures. This position must have a knowledge base of electronic system and subsystem integration, system programming manipulation, applicable industry standards, and the Federal and State laws that cover the installation and maintenance requirements of these systems. This position must also have the knowledge base to recognize and perform necessary training needs of lower grade technicians and the orientation of new technicians/personnel assigned to this area of the shop.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
Two years of experience in the repair, replacement and maintenance of a variety of specialized electronic devices and hardware preferably including some responsibility for circuit/system modifications. Ability to troubleshoot non-standard electronic and hardware devices or devices for which documentation is incomplete or not available.
Special Physical and Mental Requirements
This position requires work with hands and arms overhead for extended periods of time, working on hands and knees potentially crawling under floors and buildings. Must have the ability to: move heavy objects up to 50 lbs., climb and work from high ladders and scaffolding, work in confined spaces, stand for extended periods of time and walk significant distances daily including climbing stairs.
