Department Description
Building Services provides full maintenance and repair services for all UNC facilities and ensures the proper operation of those facilities in support of the UNC mission of teaching, research and public service. Building Services supports more than 300 campus buildings with more than 18 million gross square feet of space through the following teams: Campus Maintenance, Housing Support, HVAC Systems, Life Safety Services, and the Office of Waste Reduction and Recycling. This position is located in Life Safety Services, which is responsible for the operation and maintenance of life safety systems including access controls, CCTV, elevators, emergency generators, equipment and freezer alarms, fire alarms and sprinklers, keys, pest control, and security systems.
Position Description
Building Services Department, Life Safety Services, is seeking an Electronics Specialist, Journey to serve as a life safety technician. The position will be responsible for service, repair, programming, maintenance and inspection of fire alarm systems, smoke control systems, fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, equipment alarms, BSL 3 Lab alarms, and Irradiation alarms. This position has emergency response duty for weather events. This position provides support for Bio-Safety Level (BSL) 2+ and 3 labs. This requires a baseline blood draw and a physical. Entry into hot labs, with an Environment Health & Safety escort, will be required. Position also requires wearing respiratory protection as well as annual medical certification, fit testing, and training. Other general safety and technical training will be provided. Rotational emergency call back duty directly supporting BSL 2+/3 is required.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Associate's degree in electronics; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
A minimum of (2) years, recent experience in the Fire Alarm industry. Factory certification by at least (2) major fire alarms manufactures in programming and operations of their systems. Experience in the review of various phases of building design in reference to life safety systems. Experience in conducting system operational testing, inspections, and commissioning, in all aspects of Life Safety Systems. Experience in working with state agencies, such as: NCDOI, NCDOL, and NCDOSC. Experience in prioritizing, scheduling, assigning, and managing work load, including: service orders, preventative maintenance programs, emergency requests and backlog. Proficient with Microsoft Office.
Special Physical and Mental Requirements
Ability to stand for long periods of time, work from personnel lifts, climb ladders and/or work from scaffolding above 10 ft high. Capable of crawling under buildings, entering manholes, and/or enter or work in confined spaces. Requires stooping and squatting and ability to move heavy objects weighing 40 lb or more overhead.
