Department Description
Founded in 1987, The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Injury Prevention Research Center, IPRC, is dedicated to conducting research and providing education & training that prevents injury and violence. The IPRC was one of the five original injury centers supported by the Centers for Disease Control. Currently, IPRC is one of ten active centers in the CDC's program. IPRC is one of only two CDC-supported injury centers in the nation to be a continuously-funded CDC center-grantee over its entire history. The Center's mission is to build the field of injury prevention and control through a combination of interdisciplinary scholarly approaches to research, intervention, and evaluation as well as through the training of the next generation of researchers and practitioners.
To accomplish the specific mission and goals of the Center, IPRC is organized with a set of core personnel whose function is to assist faculty and students in the development and execution of injury research. The IPRC is based on the "center-without-walls" concept to enhance interdisciplinary and inter-institutional collaboration and to integrate injury control activities into existing programs and activities. The IPRC plays a long-term leadership role in catalyzing activities among multiple units both inside and outside the University to promote the field of injury control through collaborative research, teaching, intervention, planning and evaluation, and service to professional, governmental, and public groups.
