Department Description
The Office of Academic Affairs is a division of the Department of Medical Education. The primary purpose of the unit is to provide the highest quality of educational experiences for medical students, both through the support of on-going curricular programs and through the exploration and implementation of initiatives designed to face future challenges of our health care environment.
This unit supports the members of the student body throughout their medical careers by understanding the health of the public at local, national, and statewide levels; searching for new educational initiatives that respond to the changing health care needs of the public; developing, implementing, managing, and evaluating educational programs that support these initiatives. Another purpose is developing faculty and educational resources that encourage and stimulate active enthusiasm in the role of teaching. The organization also evaluates existing curricular programs to ensure quality and to stimulate growth and exploration of medical education programs. This unit has the responsibility of overseeing students' progress through the curriculum to ensure that students graduate with the skills, knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and professional commitment necessary for them to practice medicine in future years.
The unit is responsible for every aspect of the education of medical students: curriculum, evaluation, assessment, advising, student health and wellness, placement in clerkships, residency match. The unit also is responsible for continuing medical education of practicing physicians who work at UNC Hospitals.
Position Description
The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the delivery of curriculum to medical students in any of the three phases. This position will work within the Individualization Phase, the third of three phases of the undergraduate medical curriculum and involves students completing career-based electives and graduation requirements in preparation for residency. This position will specifically focus on the management of electives, including annually updating course catalog offerings, assisting with the creation of new electives, and tracking final grades. This position will also assist in the Foundation Phase, the first phase of the curriculum. The position will coordinator the deliver of one medical science block and proctor standardized exams. Finally, this position will also manage the Scholarly Concentration Program, a multi-track, longitudinal option for medical students to pursue an area of interest in an in-depth manner. Overall, this position will lead the communication of administrative and educational information to physicians, students, and site-specific staff. The positions will work in many different software platforms, including Sakai and one45, to carry out functions; as well as will be responsible for inputting and extracting critical data required for final grades and course evaluation required by the school's accreditation body.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution, preferably in education, instructional design, educational technology, or related discipline; and two years of experience in a customer service position, teaching, educational testing, instructional design/curriculum development or educational program management; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Experience working in academic setting, especially higher education administration, and preferably in a health field. Experience with Sakai is preferred. Knowledge and familiarity with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an alumnus or staff member is preferred.
